Carla, Arthur Renwick (46" x 44", colour photograph, 2006)
2010 at the Richmond Art Gallery begins with an exhibition of photographic work by First Nations artist, Arthur Renwick. Originally from Kitamaat, and now based in Toronto, Renwick’s recent work has been garnering a lot of attention nationally and internationally.
Mask is a group of larger-than-life portraits of First Nations artists from various disciplines. Renwick spoke at length with each artist about the complex relationship between representation and First Nations people. The results are larger than life-sized portraits of people “pulling faces” as they look back through the lens in response to that history.
Renwick received his Master in Fine Arts from Concordia University, Montreal in 1993. Renwick has participated in both solo and group exhibitions at public galleries and Museums, including Gallery 44 Centre for Contemporary photography, the Winnipeg Art Gallery and the Museum for Textiles. Renwick thoughtfully combines politically engaged subjects with a contemporary aesthetics to create sophisticated, beautifully crafted works. He won the K. M. Hunter artist award in 2005.
Exhibition Tours will be provided daily 3:00-9:00pm during O Zone period, February 12-28.
